Gartner, Inc. released 10 key predictions that showcase the trends and events that will change the nature of business and IT in 2007 and beyond:

_ Through 2009, market share for the top 10 IT outsourcers will decline to 40.0% (from 43.5% now), equaling a revenue shift of $5.4 billion. As market share declines, some key outsourcing vendors will cease to exist in their current named form.

_ Only one Asia/Pacific-based service provider will make the global top 20 through 2010.

_ Blogging and community contributors will peak in the first half of 2007. Given the trend in the average life span of a blogger and the current growth rate of blogs, there are already more than 200 million ex-bloggers. Consequently, the peak number of bloggers will be around 100 million at some point in the first half of 2007.

_ By 2009, corporate social responsibility (CSR) will be a higher board-and-executive level priority than regulatory compliance.

_ By the end of 2007, 75% of enterprises will be infected with undetected, financially motivated, targeted malware that evaded their traditional perimeter and host defenses.

_ Vistawill be the last major release of Microsoft Windows. The era of monolithic deployments of software releases is nearing an end.

_ By 2010, the average total cost of ownership (TCO) of new PCs will fall by 50%.

_ By 2010, 60% of the worldwide cellular population will be "trackable" via an emerging "follow-me Internet."

_ Through 2011, enterprises will waste $100 billion buying the wrong networking technologies and services.

_ By 2008, nearly 50% of data centers worldwide will lack the necessary power and cooling capacity to support high-density equipment.

TeamAware Maillot Basket lumineux - TeamAware Wearable Display for team sports

TeamAwear is an interesting research project of Mitchell Page, a student at The University of Sydney.
TeamAwear is so named for "Team Sports Awareness Wearable Display".
As Mitchell Page says: “The TeamAwear system aims to actively enhance the awareness and understanding of a team sport for its stakeholders, including athletes, referees, coaches and spectators, without negatively disturbing its game-play”.
He chose basketball for trial and he created jerseys equipped with a small microprocessor that controls the display and the interaction between different jerseys’ players.
Each jersey can represent game-related information sources in real-time, such as the amount of individual fouls, points, scores and time alerts.
The display technology used is based on EL-Foil stripes (Electro-luminescent stripe made of laminated material that contains a particular fluorescent coloring).
Good luck to TeamAware...

Bao Xishun, a Mongolian herdsman, 54, 2m36 (7ft 8.95in) high (the world's tallest living man according to the Guinness World Records list) has been called in to rescue two dolphins in a ocean aquarium in Fushun, north-east China.
The dolphins swallowed some plastic from the perimeter of their pool and the vets were unable to surgically remove the plastic pieces.
Realizing that the plastic could only be removed by a human hand, they called Mr Bao (his arm is 1m06 long!) who put his arm into the dolphins' stomachs and pulled out the plastic shards.
"Some very small plastic pieces are still left in the dolphins' stomachs," said Zhu Xiaoling, a local doctor. "However the dolphins will be able to digest these and are expected to recover soon."

Tente Géante à Astana - Giant Tent in Astana

"Khan Shatyry" is a new architectural project unveiled recently by Kazakh President, Nursultan Nazarbayev. It is located in Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan (ten years ago, President Nazarbayev decided to move from Almaty to the heart of Kazakhstan).
The project is designed by the famous UK architect Norman Foster from "Foster and Partners" and consists in building a giant transparent tent that will contain an indoor city!
The 150m high dome will be made with a very resistant material called EFTE, that absorbs sunlight to create summer conditions inside(winter in the heart of the Central Asian Steppe is very cold and temperatures often drop to -30°C).
Underneath the tent, in an area larger than ten football fields, will be a city with green oases, a tropical water park(pools, beaches, waterfalls), a golf course, tennis courts and a retail space with a wide range of cafes, restaurants and cinemas and ample car park facilities.
Even though it is an extremely difficult project, Fettah Tamince (President of Sembol, the company that is building the tent), is nevertheless confident that they will complete the construction in just 12 months.

Browsing thru Pingmag, I found some Frédéric Chaubin's photos (he's the chief editor of french magazine Citizen K) taken while travelling in Georgia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, countries where the ex-soviet empire left some architectural gems...
He has been attracted to these strange buildings, reminding me some Science-Fiction films' sets. Here are a few examples:

Hummer 02 le 4x4 qui respire - The Hummer that breathes

GM Advanced Design has won the Los Angeles Auto Show’s Design Challenge for the second year in a row!
(from General Motors Press Release) GM HUMMER O2

In approaching this year’s LA Design Challenge, General Motors Advanced Design, California debated whether absolute efficiency and recycle ability are the only measure of a vehicle’s environmental benefit? Thus launched the basis of our studio’s efforts, a study of whether the daily use of a vehicle could result in a “Net Gain” for the environment? The team drew upon inspiration by growing trends in green architecture and the concept of reducing one’s “Carbon Footprint”. We asked ourselves, “If the typical Los Angeles automobile spends 95% of its time out doors, why can’t that same car give back to the environment?”The Hummer O2 epitomizes the ethos of the true Southern California outdoors enthusiast with rugged capability, a “tread lightly” contact system and construction methods that promote safety, accessibility, and post-consumer reuse.

“THE HUMMER THAT BREATHES”
Why can’t a car give back to our environment? We are each responsible for a damaging and non-productive “carbon footprint”- the effect our daily lives have on the earth’s environment. The Hummer O2 is an automotive concept which explores the use of basic science principles that would result in a reversal of our daily toll on the surrounding environment. The Hummer O2 represents the first time a vehicle has been designed to give back to our environment, in essence, an environmental NET GAIN over the lifespan of the vehicle. The Hummer O2 concept features a revolutionary phototropic body shell that produces pure oxygen throughout the lifespan of the vehicle. It’s actually quite simple, algae-filled body panels transform harmful CO2 into pure oxygen that issubsequently released back into the environment. To further reduce environmental impact, the O2’s construction specifies the use of 100% post consumer materials like aluminum (frame), VOC-free finishes (seats) and PETE (glazing).

PHOTOSYNTHESIS: The phototropic body panels function as the “leafs” of the O2. Each one containsan optimized photobioreactor where a solution of algae and water transformstoxic carbon dioxide into pure oxygen. The oxygen is then released back into theenvironment as well as inside the cockpit. Oil changes are replaced by annualalgae replacement. The used algae are then recycled as biomass for theproduction of energy.

BREATHING: The flow of Co2 and oxygen is regulated by a two-way valve system (“MisticDevices” TM) in the corner of each panel. These sophisticated devices controland monitor the amount of CO2 and source nutrition needed for the algaecultivation and optimize oxygen production and distribution.

STRUCTURE: A central aluminum “tree” creates a perfect hexagonal structure that bothprotects the central hydrogen tank and supports the external structural bodypanels. The stiff body panels transform the tree intro a safe enclosed spaceframetaking care of side impact protection. Front and rear caps connect thepowertrain and suspension (“roots”) firmly to the “tree”.

ENERGY: Four modular and self-contained fuel cells power the hydraulic motors attachedto each wheel. New water-based hydraulic fluid is used. The hydrogen tank isfound in an ideal central location for both safety and structural purposes, becoming this way the literal and metaphorical “heart” of the vehicle.

FOOTPRINT
Active Tread TM tires provide optimum low resistance when driving on thehighway while still allowing good off-road progress as their shape changes, adapting to and protecting the soil.

Extreme Luge Flash Game

A visiter!

LHC Large Hadron Collider

LHC "Large Hadron Collider" will be the most powerful particles accelerator ever built.
It is under construction at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) at the Swiss-French border near Geneva. It is scheduled to begin operation in November 2007 and it will probe deeper into matter than ever before.
LHC is contained in a 27 km circumference underground tunnel in which superconducting magnets will begin accelerating protons at the speed of light, producing a collision energy of 14 TeV, replicating conditions a few microseconds after the Big Bang.
LHC will help us to understand better the Universe's origin and will help answer some fundamental questions:

Why elementary particles have mass and why are they different?

Does the "Higgs boson" (a particle supposed to be explaining the origins of the mass of other elementary particles) exist?

Why are there violations of the symmetry of matter and antimatter?

Although scientists have a good idea of what they hope to find with LHC, nature may well have surprises...
One thing is certain: LHC will change our view of the Universe...

A team of software engineers from the University of Toronto developped a new tool called "Psiphon" . It allows users to bypass Internet censorship imposed in several countries. Psiphon's role is to connect a user from an Internet restricted country to a user in an Internet free country. Psiphon needs to be installed on a host computer in a non-restricted country and then the user from a censored Internet country can login to that computer through an encrypted connection identical to Https used by banking services and email providers. Psiphon is easy to use, users from a restricted Internet country do not need to install the program, they just have to login to the host computer through a password, and according to the team that designed the soft, there is no way to trace the users' tracks. Because Psiphon works by connecting to trusted users, people using that soft should be very careful about whom they trust. Governments from countries that restrict Internet would have no problem in installing fake hosts...
Let's hope that this program will contribute to the freedom of expression throughout the world...
P.S.: Psiphon will be publicly available from December 1st 2006

Kitewing

Kitewing was created by two finnish guys about ten years ago.

It's a wing-shaped kite that you can ride on any surface with skis, snowboard, mountainboard, skateboard, off-road skates, in-line skates and ice-skates.

It's like a mix between kitesurfing and windsurfing...
