Maya Hotel: Floating Pyramid - Pyramide Flottante

Oceanic-Creations, a Swedish based company, has unveiled plans to build floating commercial and residential buildings around the world with the help of a new composite material.
This unique composite material invented by Kockums (Thyssen- Krupp Group) for the Swedish Royal Navy features built-in insulation that makes the constructions suitable for all types of climate, from the freezing cold to extreme heat.
The new composite material, which the maker says is up to six times lighter and 10 times stronger than steel depending on the reinforcement material, can also cut maintenance costs by 30 to 40 percent.
Oceanic-Creations' first major project, the Maya Pyramid Hotel, is estimated to cost around $209 million and will be located south of Cancun, Mexico, on the Caribbean Sea.

Grand Canyon West, a destination owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe at the Grand Canyon’s western rim, located 120 miles east of Las Vegas, is finishing the construction of "Skywalk", the first-ever cantilever shaped glass walkway to suspend more than 4,000 feet above the Colorado River and extend 70 feet from the canyon’s rim.
The Skywalk is a partnership between the Hualapai tribe and entrepreneur David Jin of Las Vegas, designed by MRJ Architects and structurally engineered by Lochsa Engineering.
Shywalk is designed to hold 72 tons, to withstand an 8.0 Richter Scale magnitude earthquake and resist to winds exceeding 100 mph.
Grand Canyon West announces March 28, 2007 as the official public opening of The Skywalk and it will cost you $25 to walk on the glass bridge (glass made by St Gobain), offering a unique panoramic view of the Grand Canyon.

Aquadom, Le plus grand aquarium cylindrique du monde - Aquadom, the world's largest cylindrical aquarium

Tente Géante à Astana - Giant Tent in Astana

"Khan Shatyry" is a new architectural project unveiled recently by Kazakh President, Nursultan Nazarbayev. It is located in Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan (ten years ago, President Nazarbayev decided to move from Almaty to the heart of Kazakhstan).
The project is designed by the famous UK architect Norman Foster from "Foster and Partners" and consists in building a giant transparent tent that will contain an indoor city!
The 150m high dome will be made with a very resistant material called EFTE, that absorbs sunlight to create summer conditions inside(winter in the heart of the Central Asian Steppe is very cold and temperatures often drop to -30°C).
Underneath the tent, in an area larger than ten football fields, will be a city with green oases, a tropical water park(pools, beaches, waterfalls), a golf course, tennis courts and a retail space with a wide range of cafes, restaurants and cinemas and ample car park facilities.
Even though it is an extremely difficult project, Fettah Tamince (President of Sembol, the company that is building the tent), is nevertheless confident that they will complete the construction in just 12 months.

Polytechnic University (Minsk, Belarus 1981)
Browsing thru Pingmag, I found some Frédéric Chaubin's photos (he's the chief editor of french magazine Citizen K) taken while travelling in Georgia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, countries where the ex-soviet empire left some architectural gems...
He has been attracted to these strange buildings, reminding me some Science-Fiction films' sets. Here are a few examples:

Ministère des routes (Tbilissi, Géorgie 1975) Photo: Frédéric Chaubin
Roads Ministry (Tbilisi, Georgie 1975)

"Palais du Mariage" (Tbilissi, Géorgie 1985) Photo: Frédéric Chaubin
"Wedding Palace" (Tbilisi, Georgie 1985)

"Hôtel Druzhba" (Yalta, Ukraine 1984) Photo: Frédéric Chaubin
“Druzhba Holiday Center Hall” (Yalta, Ukraine, 1984)
I hope that Frédéric Chaubin will show us some other photos of odd buildings from Soviet Era thru a book or a website...
