Creative Time présente "Playing the Building", une installation par David Byrne au Battery Maritime Building de New York, et ce, jusqu'au 10 août 2008.
Après une première exposition en 2005 à la Färgfabriken de Stockholm, David Byrne (ex Talking Heads) récidive à New York en transformant le Great Hall du Battery Maritime Building en un gigantesque instrument musical!
Chaque touche de l'orgue est reliée à des mécanismes attachés aux poutres du plafond, aux conduites d'électricité, aux tuyauteries et à d'autres pans de la structure et le public peut ainsi "jouer de l'immeuble"!
Creative Time Presents "Playing the Building", an installation by David Byrne at The Battery Maritime Building in New York.
"Playing the building is a sound installation in which the infrastructure, the physical plant of the building, is converted into a giant musical instrument. Devices are attached to the building structure — to the metal beams and pillars, the heating pipes, the water pipes — and are used to make these things produce sound.
The activations are of three types: wind, vibration, striking. The devices do not produce sound themselves, but they cause the building elements to vibrate, resonate and oscillate so that the building itself becomes a very large musical instrument!"
